- Description: American Airlines is clawing back 25,000 AAdvantage miles credited by mistake, but offering 5,000 apology miles instead. Here's where things stand.

American Airlines is reversing the 25,000 bonus miles that were mistakenly credited to accounts through an [AAdvantage Business promotion](https://viewfromthewing.com/american-airlines-business-account-promo-code-gives-25000-free-aadvantage-miles-instantly/?ref=pnm.now) earlier this week. The promotion was meant to be targeted, but American's systems failed to restrict it to eligible accounts — so anyone who entered the code got the miles. Or so they thought.

American confirmed the reversal in a statement: "After reviewing the accounts involved, we confirmed that some claims did not meet the promotion's eligibility requirements. As a result, the deposited miles have been removed to ensure all balances reflect the correct totals."

The bright side? American is depositing 5,000 apology miles into affected accounts. So anyone who grabbed the code still nets 5,000 miles on a promotion they weren't eligible for.

Oddly, some reports indicate that affected accounts show the 25,000-mile deposit plus the 5,000 apology miles. Only time will tell if this sticks.

American made the mistake, and they're owning it. That's the right call. Offering 5,000 apology miles is reasonable given the circumstances. That said, know that when a promo code goes wide like this, it's usually worth trying. Sometimes it sticks, and when it doesn't, you're no worse off than before.
