Following [United's lead](https://www.pnm.now/united-new-international-cities-a321xlr/), Air Canada just announced its own intercontinental expansion. The airline added five new destinations for summer 2027 — Basel (BSL), Dubrovnik (DBV), Guangzhou (CAN), Oslo (OSL), and Shannon (SNN) — plus a new Toronto (YYZ) to Nice (NCE) route, two schedule boosts, and four routes going year-round.

Guangzhou is the biggest name on the list. It becomes Air Canada's third mainland China city after Beijing (PEK) and Shanghai (PVG), and it's the only nonstop to Guangzhou from any North American carrier. The European routes are notable too, since they're operated by the carrier's new Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

Here's a look at the new routes:

Vancouver (YVR)–Guangzhou (CAN)

May 4 · 3x weekly · Boeing 787-9

Year-round

Montréal (YUL)–Dubrovnik (DBV)

May 11 · 3x weekly · Boeing 787-8

Seasonal

Toronto (YYZ)–Oslo (OSL)

Jun. 2 · 4x weekly · Airbus A321XLR

Seasonal

Toronto (YYZ)–Shannon (SNN)

Jun. 10 · 3x weekly · Airbus A321XLR

Seasonal

Montréal (YUL)–Basel (BSL)

Jun. 16 · 4x weekly · Airbus A321XLR

Seasonal

Toronto (YYZ)–Nice (NCE)

Jun. 16 · 2x weekly · Airbus A330-300

Seasonal

There's more here than the new destinations. On March 28, the Toronto to Shanghai (PVG) flight resumes daily service, and the Toronto to London (LHR) daytime flight returns.

Air Canada is also upgrading four seasonal routes to year-round service: Toronto to Guatemala City (GUA), Montréal to Guatemala City, Montréal to Lima (LIM), and Montréal to Tenerife (TFS).

On the Europe side, these new routes show just how powerful the A321XLR is for North American airlines. Routes like Montréal to Basel don't make sense on a widebody, but they're a perfect match for a plane with under 200 seats. Expect to see even more of these secondary European routes in the coming years.
