# There's No More Wiggle Room in American's 24-Hour Refund Policy

As reported by [View From the Wing](https://viewfromthewing.com/new-american-airlines-policy-makes-24-hour-refunds-brutal-miss-the-deadline-by-one-second-and-cash-is-gone/?ref=pnm.now), American is now converting all ticketing, cancellation, and departure timestamps to UTC and running two exact elapsed-time tests: the ticket must be issued at least 168 hours before departure, and the cancellation must occur within 24 hours of ticketing.

This information comes from an internal American Airlines update sent to employees. It confirms a change first [reported](https://viewfromthewing.com/american-airlines-quietly-ends-24-hour-refunds-on-last-minute-tickets/?ref=pnm.now) earlier this month, when American quietly moved the advance-purchase requirement for last-minute tickets from two days to seven, reversing a customer-friendly policy it had in place since 2017.

One thing to note: It's the ticketing timestamp that counts, not when you clicked the purchase button. If you're booking last-minute and ticket issuance is delayed, you could end up ticketed inside that 168-hour cutoff even though you booked outside of it. In that case, you're not eligible to cancel within 24 hours for a full refund.

American is applying the federal minimum here — airlines only have to offer a 24-hour hold or a penalty-free cancellation for tickets bought a week out, not both.

This is unfortunate news from American, and it could make for a real headache for last-minute travelers. If there's any chance you'll need to cancel a close-in booking, don't book a cash fare directly from American. Book with miles instead — AAdvantage awards can be canceled and reinstated for free — or route the purchase through Priceline, which still voids tickets through the next business day, regardless of how close you are to departure.
