- Description: Delta's new Basic Business fare strips lounge access and seat selection from Delta One. The bigger risk: it gives Delta cover to raise prices on everything above it.

Delta today launched three new stripped-down fare tiers: Delta First Basic, Premium Select Basic, and Basic Business. The names explain the concept. You (maybe) pay less; you get less.

Basic Business is the one to pay attention to. It's a Delta One business class ticket — lie-flat seat and all — but with a list of carve-outs. Starting January 19, 2027, Basic Business passengers won't have access to Delta One Lounges and won't be able to choose their seat at the time of booking. They get one fewer checked bag, face cancellation fees if plans change, and earn fewer SkyMiles.

Delta framed the launch as "giving price-sensitive travelers a new entry point into the premium cabins." The airline has been signaling this move for roughly two years and had already introduced Comfort+ basic fares last fall. Meanwhile, United launched basic versions of its Polaris business-class and Premium Plus tickets earlier this spring.

Andrew's Take

Basic economy didn't just create a cheaper option — it normalized charging extra for things that used to come standard. I'd expect the same thing here. Now that there's a Basic Business floor, lounge access and seat selection become upsells rather than defaults. You may end up spending more to get the Delta One experience you've always gotten.
