# This New TSA Program Lets PreCheck Members Past Security Without a Flight

The TSA just launched [Gateside by TSA PreCheck](https://www.tsa.gov/precheck/gateside-tsa-precheck?ref=pnm.now), a free program that lets PreCheck members clear security at participating airports on days they aren't flying.

Roughly 20 airports already run their own visitor pass programs, but those send you through the standard line. Gateside is the first centrally run version, and the TSA says it's the only way a non-traveler can get airside via the PreCheck lanes.

You apply online through the TSA's visitor pass portal, which requires a login.gov account and your Known Traveler Number (KTN). Applications open one to three days before your visit and close the day before. Approval isn't automatic — each airport caps the number of passes it issues per day, so peak travel dates may fill up. 

There's no paper or digital pass required. Instead, you show up with an acceptable ID, head for the TSA PreCheck lane, and be ready to pull up your portal dashboard on your phone. Passes cover one calendar day with re-entry allowed, and kids can tag along without their own PreCheck as long as you add them when you apply.

Gateside is live at 13 airports so far, with more expected in the coming months: Phoenix-Mesa (AZA), Columbus (CMH), Dallas (DFW), Detroit (DTW), Wichita (ICT), Indianapolis (IND), Harry Reid (LAS), Los Angeles (LAX), Little Rock (LIT), Oklahoma City (OKC), Omaha (OMA), San Diego (SAN), and Salt Lake City (SLC).

This is a great new benefit for sending a friend off at the airport, meeting someone on arrival, or those times when you really want a $12 Bud Light at the airport Chili's. What I wouldn't do is treat it as a lounge play, since almost every airport lounge still wants a same-day boarding pass at the door.
