American is adding cash and miles bookings for AAdvantage members, announcing that the feature will roll out over the coming weeks on aa.com and in the app.

Like miles and money redemptions from JetBlue and other airlines, you select a cash fare and — at checkout — a slider lets you choose how much of the fare to cover with miles.

The initial rollout is expected to cover accounts registered in the U.S. and domestic flights on American, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. Right now, the airline hasn't said what each mile is worth or if the redemption rate will be fixed.

Andrew's Take

Cash and points bookings have been around for years, and they're rarely a good deal. I don't expect American's take on cash and miles to be any different, so I'd save your rewards to book flights outright.
