While many airlines are flying to Providenciales (PLS) this winter, BermudAir just staked out a much quieter corner of Turks and Caicos. The carrier will launch the first-ever nonstop flights between Newark (EWR) and South Caicos International Airport (XSC), giving New Yorkers access to one of the region's most secluded islands.

The seasonal route begins December 20 and operates 2x weekly on Thursdays and Sundays through early April. Before this, the only nonstop to South Caicos from the U.S. was American's twice-weekly Miami flight — everyone else had to connect through Providenciales and hop over on a prop-jet.

The South Caicos route rounds out BermudAir's broader Turks and Caicos push this winter, which also includes new nonstop service to Providenciales (PLS) from Newark (EWR), Boston (BOS), Baltimore (BWI), Raleigh-Durham (RDU), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE), and Toronto (YYZ).

This is the kind of niche new route I love covering. The island has flown under the radar because it's historically been hard to reach, and a Newark nonstop changes that for travelers eyeing Salterra, a new Marriott Luxury Collection property just minutes from XSC.
