These awards can't be changed once booked, and canceling incurs a 3,100 yen per person fee (roughly $19.62). JAL also adds fuel surcharges to award tickets, and they're steep on long-haul flights to North America and Europe. If you need miles, Citi ThankYou has a 30% transfer bonus to JAL through Oct. 24, and Rove has a 50% bonus through Oct. 31

Economy to Japan for 18,900 miles each way is a good price, and with Rove's bonus it works out to about 12,600 Rove Miles. If you're starting in Europe, the premium cabin prices are the better deal, but JAL's fuel surcharges will cut into the savings.
